Keep San Lorenzo Valley Water District Local & Independent: No Scotts Valley Consolidation

Keep San Lorenzo Valley Water District Local & Independent: No Scotts Valley Consolidation
Why this petition matters
San Lorenzo Valley's ecologically sensitive watershed and water resources must continue to be managed by the people who live and work in the San Lorenzo Valley.
Neighboring pro-development city of Scotts Valley Water District has initiated efforts to absorb, or “consolidate” the San Lorenzo Valley Water District.
Through their PR firm, they site “economies of scale.” The end result would be loss of local control, loss of local jobs, loss of services, impact to the environment and to water quality.
Local control
The SLV Water District board is currently accountable to SLV residents. That would change with Scotts Valley consolidation. SLV residents prefer to control our water and watershed, not a neighboring city whose motivation is rapid growth with multiple development projects in their pipeline.
Local ownership, local accountability, local control.
Lack of transparency
2 days before the SLV Water District board meeting (Feb 4) a press release was sent out by Scotts Valley Water District’s PR agency to the media. No communication to ratepayers, no outreach, no opportunity on such short notice for a representative response from SLV residents. Currently, the County of Santa Cruz supports the Scotts Valley effort.
