SLzUSD, & the SLzHS Admins: students demand the mascot to stay, and you change proposal.

The Issue

At San Lorenzo High School, and within the San Lorenzo Unified School district lies a brewing issue, the possible coming change of our mascot, which would devastate many of the students and parents/alumni. Numerous schools across the state of California are also feeling what we are. This is all thanks to the state senate bill SB-539, requiring change in all "confederate" related imagery across the state. It will go active by January 1st, 2017.

Here's the simple truth: the majority of students of San Lorenzo High School, the parents, and the Staff want to keep the mascot. Period. The administration (our principal, Tovi C. Scruggs) is approaching the School Board of Education with a proposal to remove our beloved mascot, the Rebel Guy. We have had a past, and we did use to have a mascot that represented, in many ways, a confederate. He was Colonel Reb. Times have changed, the mascot has been changed once, and its been years since the last change. The change was drastic, and resulted in our great current mascot, the Rebel Guy, who has been dimmed down to a cartoon looking character, with the silhouette of a pioneer, or a man of the western days, in no way supporting racist agendas. This time they want it gone.

We at San Lorenzo are the rebels. We want to keep the Rebel Guy! Once a rebel, always a rebel. If you're a rebel, and you understand... please support us!
