Improve safety for cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians on Taylor St Bridge

The Issue

A cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident on June 17, 2013 on eastbound Taylor Street at the SB 87 on ramp. This highlights the need to improve safety for cyclists on the Taylor Street Bridge. Vehicles regularly travel toward Highway 87 at excessive speeds. Cyclists are completely vulnerable and blind to traffic as they work to climb the incline. Adding to the dangerous conditions, the bike lane disappears nearing the on-ramp and cyclists are forced to merge left across freeway bound traffic in order to rejoin the bike lane. In addition, vehicles turning left onto the SB 87 on-ramp very often block eastbound Taylor traffic in the intersection as the line grows at the metering lights.

The intention of this petition is to ask the San Jose City Council and Department of Transportation to work towards creating a safer Taylor Street Bridge for all cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians.

-We ask for the installation of traffic calming features to slow down all traffic to improve safety and livability.
-We ask for the installation of a protected cycle-track that separates cyclists from motorists.
-We ask for the installation of an LED-highlighted crosswalk at Spring Street to provide better pedestrian access to the the Taylor Street Rock Garden and community sports facilities.

The recent loss of a San Jose community member and bicyclist in the tragic hit and run accident at the Route 87/Taylor Street Bridge is a sad reminder of the important work that we need to continue to pursue in order to have better and safer bicycling conditions in San Jose. During my bike ride visit to the accident site today, I saw the touching “ghost bike” memorial placed by his best friend. My heart goes out to the family members, friends and the bicycling community members that are affected by this loss. San Jose is on a path to “change” its transportation system to support more travel by biking, as well as walking and transit. I appreciate reading the over 100 comments on the “change.org” petition that support this direction. I encourage Chris Pontiga and others to work with the San Jose DOT on an improvement plan for 87/Taylor. As this is a Caltrans facility, I suggest we work collaboratively with them, along with our other pro-bike partners, the San Jose Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. (Chris, please e-mail me your contact information so we can discuss some follow up actions.)
