Open Access on the Bay Area Ridge Trail

The Issue

The Fifield-Cahill Trail is an existing gravel section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail that runs 12.8 miles through public land on the SF Peninsula. Trail access was granted by reservation for guided tours three days a week. However, tours are not currently running due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A permit system for unsupervised access to the trail from dawn to dusk has been in discussion for years and was planned to start in 2016. Now is the time to make it happen!

The SF Planning Commission is accepting public comments until Aug 10, 2020. Please support opening Crystal Springs trail access for low impact outdoor recreation and appreciation of our local natural resources. This will directly benefit hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians and indirectly benefit all citizens of surrounding communities.

You can also contact Timothy Johnston directly at timothy.johnston@sfgov.org or 1650 Mission Street, Suite 400 San Francisco, CA 94103.
