San Francisco Unified School District Parents for Safe and Equitable Return to School started this petition to San Francisco School Board and

There are over 55,000 children enrolled in San Francisco Unified School District, all of whom have been learning virtually since March 2020. While public schools across the country have started to re-open for in-person education (NYC, Boston, Chicago), San Francisco Unified School District does not yet have any meaningful, public plan to re-open schools. SFUSD's current Phase 2 plan includes less than 1,000 children, leaving the other 98% of SFUSD students with no clear pathway to returning to school.

As a parent of an SFUSD student, I am worried that my child - and children across San Francisco - are facing severe academic, social-emotional and physical impacts that we don't yet fully understand. Elementary school age children need to be provided with reliable and consistent environments for kids just be kids with other kids. Even if the solution only included a couple hours of outdoor play and engagement that would be an improvement to the status quo.

I request that the School Board ready a plan, no later than its last meeting in December 2020, to support a safe, full return to school for all children enrolled at SFUSD no later than February 1, 2021. This plan should include at least 3 options for all children: full in-person instruction, full virtual instruction, and hybrid instruction. This plan must include all necessary steps to also ensure teacher and school district employee safety as well.
