Ross Mirkarimi's record of service to the City speaks for itself. As Supervisor for many years and co-founder of the Green Party, Ross has long been a leading voice and advocate on many issues: environmental protection, gun control, prison reform and legalization of marijuana. Now, ominous forces are on the hunt, seeking to burn this man on the altar of political correctness, to incinerate his record of service and to deprive San Francisco of its duly elected Sheriff.

Certainly, domestic violence is a serious matter. But what about the presumption of innocence, the right to due process and notion of the punishment fitting the crime? Witch-hunters are already calling for his head, before he has even had the chance to fully exercise his constitutionally protected rights. Even assuming he were convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, should his punishment be the destruction of his career, public humiliation and the forcible separation from his wife and child? Such punishment is not metered-out to convicted criminals of far worse crimes, although given our current political and economic climate, assuming they are tried at all.

Ross' wife herself has refuted the charges against him, and has steadfastly stood by his side. If she has forgiven him his trangressions, shouldn't we also? Or should we add a wife and son to the list of victims of this witch hunt by depriving them of a loving husband and father?
