Chuck Cox started this petition to San Diego Unified School District Board of Education

The Tierrasanta community was not involved in this name change.  We pay property taxes, a part of which goes to funding public schools - taxation, but no representation! We were not allowed to participate in the discussion regarding the name change petition submitted by Serra High School principal, Dr. Erica Renfree.  Her petition did include letters of support from outsiders, why not Tierrasanta residents?  The letters supporting her petition contained factually incorrect information.

Why should students as young as 14 and 15 years of age be allowed to vote on a name change, when adults living in the community affected were not?

Dr. Renfree indicated that process took much of 2020.  There was no effort to engage the residents of Tierrasanta to determine their support or non-support.

Two students began the initial inquiry seeking a name change for the school mascot, not a renaming of the school.  It was Dr. Renfree who planted and encouraged the idea to change the school's name.

Her entire process was conducted at a time when the existing SDUSD Administrative Policy allowed for no such actions.

This name change affects the cultural character of our community and needs the input of all stakeholders, not just students, their parents and possibly selected alumni.
