Before the news, note the Carmel Valley Community Park is celebrating its 15th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:30 PM. Join us for a fun afternoon & concert. See www.cvsd.com or call 858-552-1616.
On One Paseo, contrary to what you might be hearing in the news, the Planning Commission did NOT approve the project today (October 16, 2014.) Instead, they specifically decided to send the project on to the City Council WITHOUT a recommendation.
To start the day, the Commission first considered ways to reduce the project, including cutting the retail component in half (down to 100,000 SF.) They could not agree on this approach, and spent many hours discussing One Paseo. Clearly, some commissioners were for the project, and some against. There was a great deal of concern expressed about both traffic and building height.
The Commission finally noted that they agree that the project in concept is good, but they are unable to recommend approval to City Council. They offered a list of suggestions for City Council to consider before approving any project, including a reduction in building heights. One Commissioner noted that there are some reductions that appear to be appropriate here, and that if he were in the "shoes of the developer", he would accept less office space to allow for lower building heights.
The next important meeting will be the City Council, possibly on December 15, 2014. That will be the FINAL meeting, where the City decides to accept or reject the project.
Soon (but not yet) we'll start our LAST letter writing campaign to the City Council. For the moment, we're just waiting for the next step.
