Hold Kay Buell accountable for starvation of 13 dogs
The Issue
Sherre Kay Buell stands accused of 15 counts of felony animal cruelty after starving to the brink of death, and even death itself, 13 dogs, in Hesperia and Apple Valley, CA. Buell masqueraded as an animal rescuer, yet behind closed doors was inflicting unthinkable cruelty upon the animals she pretended to care about.
Buell is facing charges for 3 felony counts and 1 misdemeanor count of animal cruelty in Hesperia, and a further 12 felony counts in Apple Valley. She was found to be harboring numerous severely emaciated dogs in April/May 2015 following the investigation of a dog license violation by Apple Valley Animal Services (AVAS). AVAS removed a total of 13 dogs from Buell’s property. One of the animals was in such poor health that it died whilst being transported to the local veterinarian, and two of the animals had to be humanely euthanized due to the impact of the starvation. A deceased dog was also found discarded in a trash can at Buell's rented home.
Buell’s arrest rocked the animal rescue community, as she was known to have fostered and transported for numerous rescue groups. The fate of a number of animals she fostered is still unknown.
Here is the story of the miraculous recovery of one of the surviving starved dogs relinquished to Rescue from the Hart in December 2014 by Buell.
Friday April 22, 2016, Buell is set to attend a Mental Health hearing at Victorville Superior Court, from 8.30am onwards (14455 Civic Dr, Victorville, California 92392). Animal advocates are invited to attend and show solidarity on the behalf of the defenseless animals that were atrociously and unnecessarily starved at the hands of Buell. We are informed by the San Bernardino District Attorney's Office that the possible outcomes of the hearing are 1) Buell is deemed to meet Mental Health criteria warranting custody for a period of time in a mental health facility, along with probation; or 2) the Mental Health criteria is not met and the criminal court process is resumed, leading to a potential trial and jail sentence.
We urge the San Bernardino District Attorney, and the Superior Court Judge, to hold Kay Sherre Buell sufficiently accountable for her actions; whether they were the result of a mentally sick individual, or a calculated intent to torture, the outcome was the same; dogs' lives were needlessly lost, and broken.
