San Antonio Road Repairs for Cyclist Safety

San Antonio Road Repairs for Cyclist Safety
The Issue
San Antonio’s cycling community is calling for practical safety improvements along the stretch of road connecting Engelmann Oak, Southton Road, and Villamain.
Hundreds of riders use this route every week. Local cycling groups, including 210 Cycle Riderz, Chain Reaction, Team Taco Cycling, Fast Times Cycling, Friends with Bikes and others groups across the city, rely on these roads because they provide an option outside of heavier, high-traffic routes. This is where riders gather, train, and support both their physical health and their community.
The current condition of Villamain and Southton is creating serious safety concerns.
Deep cracks, uneven pavement, and deteriorating road surfaces are causing frequent flat tires and forcing riders to maneuver unexpectedly to avoid hazards. These conditions increase the risk of crashes and make an otherwise valuable cycling route increasingly unsafe. These gaps are wide enough for bicycle tires to fall into, creating an immediate risk of losing control.
These hazards are already causing damage and increasing the risk of crashes. Just last week, a group of approximately 20 riders experienced three flat tires in a single ride due to road conditions.
San Antonio’s cycling community continues to grow as more residents turn to biking for fitness, connection, and transportation. Existing routes like this one should be safe for the people who depend on them.
We are asking the City of San Antonio to:
- Conduct a full pavement assessment of Villamain and Southton
- Prioritize these roads for complete repaving
- Improve/widen shoulder conditions where ever possible
- Install signage that alerts drivers to the presence of cyclists
Spot repairs will not resolve the underlying safety issue. Full resurfacing is needed to restore safe riding conditions. These are practical steps that would reduce risk and improve safety on a route that is already heavily used.
Improving Villamain and Southton supports safer shared roadways for cyclists, drivers, and the surrounding community. Crashes caused by pavement failure are preventable. The responsible solution is full repaving.
Sign this petition to urge the City of San Antonio to take action before someone is seriously injured.
