Save Brackenridge Park!
The Issue
San Antonio's historic Brackenridge Park is under threat. Sunken Garden developers have proposed a park expansion that would result in a stadium capable of holding more than 7,000 people, with Brackenridge Park essentially becoming the parking lot for the venue. The stadium would hold a minimum of two events per week and would be focused on touring celebrities rather than local artists. Brackenridge Park and the neighboring San Antonio Zoo are home to 3,500 animals and 750 different species. The environmental impacts to the park would be damaging with many of the animals being displaced or harmed in the building of the venue.
Going to Brackenridge Park has been a family tradition for many San Antonio residents dating back to the parks establishment in 1899. And the land and water were utilized by Indigenous people for thousands of years before. With this in mind, there has been zero community input or involvement in this project. This is yet another form of gentrification on our historic city and a form of erasure on our culture. We ask city officials and Mayor Ron Nirenberg to reconsider the many effects this destruction will cause to our city.
