*** Con questa petizione chiediamo alle istituzioni, al COMUNE di San Giuliano Terme, al Presidente della Regione Toscana Enrico ROSSI e al Ministro dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo Dario FRANCESCHINI di farsi carico di questa preziosa testimonianza del nostro medioevo, e di avviare quanto prima un percorso di recupero, acquisendo a patrimonio pubblico la proprietà. ***

LA STORIA

La Rocca di San Paolino si trova nella frazione di Ripafratta del Comune di San Giuliano Terme (PI), sul confine tra Pisa e Lucca. Per secoli è stata il fulcro di un sistema fortificato fatto di torri e castelli, a guardia del confine tra le due potenti città rivali. Fondata da nobili lucchesi, passata poi sotto l'obbedienza pisana, è stata contesa durante tutta la sua esistenza tra le due repubbliche e, infine, da Firenze. Nel 1504 è stata ristrutturata per conto dei fiorentini dal Sangallo. A partire dal '600 è iniziato il suo lungo declino.

Negli anni '80 del Novecento è stata oggetto di un'intensa campagna di scavi archeologici, che hanno riportato alla luce gli ambienti sepolti, ma che sono stati poi interrotti.

LE SUE CONDIZIONI OGGI

Ad oggi, la Rocca è proprietà privata e abbandonata a se stessa, preda dei vandali e del degrado. Le mura presentano crepe visibili e importanti e la vegetazione sta progressivamente inglobando la struttura.

Per contro, la fortezza è inserita in un contesto paesaggistico unico, che la vede come ideale porta d'accesso al Monte Pisano, punto di partenza della sentieristica RET. A due passi dal fiume Serchio, in un territorio fatto da borghi, pievi, torri e ville, a pochissimi km da Pisa, da Lucca e dal mare, la Rocca e il suo sistema-territorio hanno tutte le carte in regola per diventare una meta culturale e turistica, complementare alle destinazioni tradizionali delle due città vicine.

Noi chiediamo che la Rocca diventi un bene pubblico, cosa che le darebbe la possibilità di accedere, nel tempo, a diverse forme di finanziamento, altrimenti impossibili, e a una progettualità condivisa con il territorio.

THE HISTORY

The Rocca of Saint Paolino is located in the village Ripafratta which is part of San Giuliano Terme, between the confines of Pisa and Lucca. For centuries it has been the centre of a fortified system of towers and castles that were used to guard the borders of the two rival cities. The Rocca of Ripafratta was founded by nobles from Lucca and was later under Pisan control, being the point of contention for the duration of the two republics, eventually also contested by Florence. In 1504 it was restored on behalf of Florence by Sangallo, Italian sculptor, architect and engineer. The 1600 marked the beginning of the decline of the fortress.

In the 1980s an intense archaeological project unearthed the buried part of the fortress. The project was interrupted and the fortress was again swallowed by greenery.

THE CURRENT SITUATION

Currently, the Rocca is privately owned; however, it is abandoned, laid to ruin by time, vandals and the elements. The walls have huge visible cracks, highlighting their instability. The greenery is progressively swallowing the ruins.

Nevertheless, the fortress is in a unique landscape feature, making it an ideal point of access to the hills between Lucca and Pisa and the starting point of a regional foothpath. In walking distance from the river Serchio, the fortress is near other medieval villages, parish churches, towers and villas. It is also only a few kilometres away from Lucca, Pisa and the sea. The Rocca of Ripafratta has a high potential to become a cultural and touristic destination, in the context of the traditional touristic attractions Lucca and Pisa.

We ask that the Rocca of Ripafratta becomes a public heritage; this will allow the access to more funding opportunities, that would be otherwise unobtainable. It would also be the starting point for a project that would be shared with the local community.
