Siamo la voce di una moltitudine. Siamo solo alcune delle migliaia di persone che in ruoli diversi, in questi spazi hanno prodotto arte, cultura e dialogo. Abitanti di Verona o di altre città, anche non limitrofe. Cittadini italiani e italiane, ma non solo. Di ogni età, posizione sociale, attitudine. Ci unisce la necessità personale e l’obbligo civile di testimoniare. 

Qui, nella magnifica Stazione Frigorifera degli ex-Magazzini Generali di Verona, e in altri importanti edifici del complesso industriale, siamo stati per più di venticinque anni corpi, non fantasmi. Mani che hanno edificato, salvaguardato, ripulito, allestito, rivitalizzato un sito che allora sì era in stato di totale abbandono, e che hanno imparato tecniche artistiche e mestieri. Orecchie che hanno potuto ascoltare più di 700 concerti di ogni genere musicale, dal nascente hip hop di strada al new jazz statunitense, dal post rock all’elettronica alle contaminazioni musicali di ogni parte del mondo; ma anche conferenze, letture, audiodocumentari, incontri con autori, critici, curatori. 

Occhi che hanno potuto vedere rassegne cinematografiche, mostre e installazioni di arte contemporanea di livello internazionale, spesso site-specific; più di 70 spettacoli teatrali, interpretati e di frequente prodotti da molte delle più affermate compagnie europee, in collaborazione anche con la Biennale di Venezia, e che solo qui hanno potuto godere dello spettacolo straordinario di un luogo unico altrimenti inaccessibile ai e alle veronesi. Bocche che hanno costruito cittadinanza con assemblee, gruppi di discussione sui diritti civili, laboratori di pratiche politiche, ma anche preziosi momenti di convivialità, scambio e relazione conciliati dalla cura per il cibo (vegetariano e vegano, già nei primi anni '90) e dal piacere della condivisione. 

Tutto questo agire, partecipare, gioire, discutere, costruire e distruggere ha trovato il suo catalizzatore in INTERZONA, comunità non-profit democratica e autogestita, con migliaia di soci e socie e centinaia di volontari e volontarie che tra il 1992 e il 2016 hanno ridato vita e dignità a un’area totalmente arroccata nel suo abbandono, ma così preziosa da meritare addirittura un doppio vincolo monumentale, non solo per il valore dei manufatti architettonici e infrastrutturali, ma anche in quanto testimonianza storica, culturale, urbanistica e sociale di un momento fondante della nostra storia economica e politica. 

Sentiamo di dover ricordare a chi non ricorda, e di far sapere a chi ignora, che l’unica narrazione offerta ai cittadini e alle cittadine di questa (sciagurata) trasformazione in complesso prevalentemente commerciale e direzionale, cioè che si tratti della rigenerazione urbana di un'area sottratta all’abbandono e al degrado per la prima volta sede di attività culturali, non corrisponde alla realtà. Lo dobbiamo non solo a noi stessi, che abbiamo vissuto direttamente e attivamente la creazione e le proposte artistiche di quasi trent'anni di Interzona, ma a tutti coloro che hanno a cuore una società vitale e aperta, capace di costruire un terreno fertile in cui la cittadinanza si fa protagonista di una comunità, in cui soprattutto le fasce più giovani possano riprendersi un ruolo da protagoniste, e non da consumatrici. 

Chiediamo quindi a coloro che, anche solo in una semplice occasione, si sono sentiti e si sentono protagonisti di questo frammento di civiltà e cittadinanza attiva che è stato Interzona, la disponibilità a firmare questa testimonianza che smentisce la narrazione univoca e arrogante che dà a questa operazione finanziaria e speculativa il nome di "rigenerazione urbana che restituisce alla città un'area abbandonata e degradata".

WE WARMLY INVITE ALL THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED INTERZONA'S CULTURAL ACTIVITIES TO SIGN AND LEAVE A COMMENT.

We are the voice of a multitude. We are just some of the thousands of people who, in different roles, in these spaces have produced art, culture and dialogue. Inhabitants of Verona or of other cities, even non-neighbouring ones. Italians but not only. Citizens of all ages, social positions, attitudes. We are united by a personal need and a civil obligation to bear witness.

Here, in the magnificent Stazione Frigorifera of the ex-Magazzini Generali in Verona, and in other important buildings of the industrial complex, we have been bodies, not ghosts, for more than twenty-five years. Hands that have built, safeguarded, cleaned, set up, revitalised a site that was then in a state of total abandonment, and that have learnt artistic techniques and crafts. Ears that have been able to listen to more than 700 concerts of every musical genre, from budding street hip hop to American new jazz, from post rock to electronics, to musical contaminations from all over the world; but also lectures, readings, audio-documentaries, meetings with authors, critics, curators.

Eyes that have been able to see film festivals, exhibitions and installations of contemporary art of an international level, often site-specific; more than 70 theatrical performances, interpreted and frequently produced by many of the most established European companies, in collaboration also with the Venice Biennale, and that only here have been able to enjoy the extraordinary spectacle of a unique place otherwise inaccessible to the people of Verona. Mouths that have built citizenship with assemblies, discussion groups on civil rights, workshops on political practices, but also precious moments of conviviality, exchange and relationships reconciled by the care for food (vegetarian and vegan, as early as the early 1990s) and the pleasure of sharing.

All this acting, participating, rejoicing, discussing, building and destroying has found its catalyst in INTERZONA, a democratic and self-managed non-profit community with thousands of members and hundreds of volunteers who, between 1992 and 2016, have given life and dignity back to an area that was totally abandoned, but so precious that it even deserves to be listed as a protected building, not only for the value of the architectural and infrastructural artefacts, but also as a historical, cultural, urban and social testimony of a founding moment of our economic and political history.

We feel we must remind those who do not remember, and let those who are ignorant know, that the only narrative offered to the citizens of this (unfortunate) transformation into a predominantly commercial and office complex, namely that it is the urban regeneration of an area rescued from abandonment and decay to become a venue for cultural activities, does not correspond to reality. We owe this not only to ourselves, who have directly and actively experienced the creation and the artistic proposals of almost thirty years of Interzona, but to all those who care about a vital and open society, capable of building a fertile ground in which citizenship becomes the protagonist of a community, in which especially the younger strata can regain a role as protagonists, and not as consumers.

We therefore ask those who, even if only on one simple occasion, have felt themselves to be protagonists of this fragment of civilisation and active citizenship that was Interzona, for their willingness to sign this testimony that denies the univocal and arrogant narrative that gives this financial and speculative operation the name of 'urban regeneration that gives back to the city an abandoned and degraded area'.
