Sincere thanks to the almost 800 people who have signed this petition to put an end to the Salvation Army’s mistreatment of its officers (ministers) by denying former officers a pension.
This is a huge ongoing battle against those who have vested interests, who do not want things to change and who want to ignore the evidence and public opinion. I’m very grateful that we’ve got a growing list of people like you on our side.
For many years officers, who only received a small allowance anyway, were told by the organisation that it was illegal for them to contribute to a private pension in addition to the Salvation Army Officers’ (Non-contributory) Pension scheme. They were also forced to sell any property prior to acceptance for officer training. This has left so many former officers in a highly vulnerable situation of which members of the public, and even members of the Salvation Army, are largely unaware.
I have so many happy memories of my work with the Salvation Army, not least during a three-year secondment to Howard Hospital in rural Zimbabwe (pictured), but I long to see the Salvation Army discover values which truly reflect its Christian ethos.
Please keep sharing to help bring an end to this modern form of slavery and entrapment.
