Petition updateSalvation Army: Stop mistreating your officers by denying early leavers a pensionSalvation Army Petition Update

Over 700 people have signed the petition calling upon the Salvation Army to end its cruel policy of denying a pension to its former officers simply because, for whatever reason, they felt the need to resign before reaching statutory retirement age. Some former officers served 35 years or more, yet do not receive a penny from the Salvation Army Officers’ Pension Fund.
The Salvation Army engages in considerable PR activity, including the current BBC television series with Paul O’Grady “The Sally Army and Me”, to convince the public that it brings compassion into a hurting world. Yet at the very centre of its corporate life it has perpetuated this form of modern day slavery for many decades, undermining all of its good work and causing immense hardship and poverty for so many people in their old age. All the other mainstream Christian denominations in the UK complied long ago with the government request to put their house in order and introduce a portable pension for clergy. The Salvation Army has rather conveniently been able to “slip through the net” and continues in this cult-like behaviour.
It is a sad reality that large corporations like the Salvation Army are often resentful of change being forced upon them from the outside. Increasingly however, the public are able to effect change in our society through raising their voice, particularly through social media. The leadership of the Salvation Army in the UK is very aware of the petition but no doubt hopes it will fade away unnoticed. We really need your help to make this harsh policy more widely known and thereby bring about much needed change.
Please keep sharing the petition.. The giving public deserve much better from the Salvation Army!
