Keep the Hollywood Plaza Sign in Salisbury DOWN!

Keep the Hollywood Plaza Sign in Salisbury DOWN!
The issue
For more than 50 years the gaudy, kitsch and comically misplaced "HOLLYWOOD" sign has stood, first as part of a drive-in and then as part of the shopping precinct. It glares down at passers by and small children almost menacingly in the suburb of Salisbury, in Adelaide only 13,149km away from the actual Hollywood. However, over recent years the sign has decayed. Large, sharp steel-edged panels have become dislodged in storms and become projectiles, threatening even the most cleverly parked VN Commodore in the car park below. Recent engineering reports by the Plaza management found the large, overwhelming sign to be dangerous. The outdated sign, along with the hideous wire mesh fencing and barbed wire decorations that adorn it's galvanised top - was recently removed. The community rejoiced, an audible sigh of relief was heard that day, as far away as Angle Vale.
The decision to remove the Hollywood sign at Hollywood Plaza has been warmly welcomed by many in the community, including business owners, employees and staff at the Plaza and the majority of listeners to the ABC Adelaide talkback show on the 5th of February 2018. Comments on the sign are that in recent years it has become dated and aged, and has formed part of community jokes. Many see it as out of place, an unwanted link to another long ago time when drive-in theatres, cigarettes and neon signs were 'cool'. Times have changed.
Some have recently begun efforts to have the dinosaur relic from another long ago age repaired and replaced to allow another generation of good Salisbury folk to recoil and cringe as they pass by, on their way to get taters for dinner or a new VB stubby holder. We wish them and their petition well.
We hope the parties concerned see the garish, antiquated sign as a relic of the past, and do not attempt to waste valuable community funds to restore or even replace this 50 year old beast of a thing. Please leave it on the recycling heap where it can at least do some good, or put it in a museum and allow the surrounding area and local businesses to prosper, progress and grow, no longer in the shadow of a 1970's relic.
