Stop Sainsbury's from closing down our local independent shops in Ladywell

The Issue

We know that a Sainsbury’s local store is planning to open on Ladywell Road.

This will have a big impact on many of Ladywell’s independent small businesses which includes our local convenience stores/newsagents/off licences, bakeries, delis, butchers and many other businesses. We have been working hard throughout these unprecedented times to continue serving our local community and without your support, we would not have been able to stand strong. But the opening of a supermarket in our local area is a threat that will mean that many of our local businesses will be forced to close permanently. A Sainsbury’s will threaten the sustainability of our local high street, by undermining our independent shops who cannot compete with the pricing structure of a corporate giant. Many families depend on the income from these businesses to lead their lives.

A Sainsbury’s store will make Gillian Street a harder and less safe place for our children and other pedestrians. Gillian street is already a very narrow road and the proposed use of this road as an entrance and loading bay for deliveries will put many of our residents at an unnecessary risk.

There are already 15 Sainsbury stores within 2 miles of Ladywell Road, the closest being the superstore in Lewisham just 0.5 miles away, followed by Sainsbury’s local stores on Loampit vale, Brockley Station, Mantle Road (Brockley), Catford station and Hither Green station.

We hope that you can help our local businesses to carry on serving our community. Please do the right thing for our community.

Please sign this petition to stop Sainsbury’s from opening a store in our local area to protect our unique high streets! And thank you for supporting our local businesses for many years!
