Saginaw County Community Cats

Saginaw County Community Cats
The Issue
The Humane Society of Saginaw County, Inc. Is under new management since August 1st. We are unpaid volunteers that receive no government funding to support our spay and neuter services. We offer low cost spay/neuter of owned pets based on financial need. We also are strong advocates of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) of community cats. Community cats refer to any unowned cats that are living outdoors. 15% of Saginaw County residents are currently feeding these homeless cats. So far this year we have trapped and fixed close to 600 community cats in Saginaw County. We are running out of funding to continue to help. We were told that Saginaw County Controller, Mr. Robert Belleman had released funding for TNR in 2018 but it somehow went unused and got put back into the general fund. We are asking residents of Saginaw County that are currently caring for outside strays, have used their own money to help outside cats, that want these cats fixed and rabies vaccinated to please sign our petition. We are begging Saginaw County to provide funding to help these cats. There is decades of research to support that TNR is proven to be the most humane and effective way to control the population of community cats. The government funded and run Saginaw County Animal Care Center on Gratiot has set their cat intake limit to a maximum of around 30 cats/kittens at any given moment. We feel that Saginaw County only housing 30 cats with a population close to 200,000 residents is ridiculous. The citizens of Saginaw County passed a levy for funding for a new Animal Care Center almost a year ago. A site to build on has not even been chosen yet for this facility. Also, we cannot find any public information telling the community what exactly our tax dollars will be funding. (How many cats will it house? Will it have a full time vet as we were promised?) The Humane Society is foster home based and we currently have 130 cats and kittens. 126 of these cats are from our TNR efforts. We have literally hundreds of citizens requesting help with community cats. We cannot do this with Saginaw County providing financial support for what we see is a serious community issue.
Please sign our petition to help the animals.
