The Issue

We are all residents of the City of Roanoke, VA, and either live on Broadway Ave., use this street daily, or reside nearby. Broadway Ave. is one of “the Carilion Corridors,” if not the primary route to Carilion. With Carilion’s recent and soon-to-open expansion, we fear the dangerous traffic situation on Broadway Ave. will only worsen.  While Broadway is nearly one-half mile long, there are no crosswalks. Along Broadway there are intersections at Stephenson, Longview, a dangerous intersection at Avenham Avenue, and another at 22nd Street before it reaches the extremely dangerous intersection with McClanahan Avenue. On the North side, you have five sizable buildings of apartments, condominiums, access to a grocery store, and restaurants. On the South side, you have the closest elementary school, the U.S. Post Office, a Seven-Eleven, restaurants, a coffee shop, doctors' offices, and Carilion.  Despite this being a very walkable neighborhood with many children and a significant population of senior citizens, there is no crosswalk and only one frequently ignored stop sign. As concerned and often endangered citizens, the undersigned would request the following changes: 1. A crosswalk at the Avenham Avenue intersection as well as a flashing lighted stop sign since the current stop sign is most often ignored.
2. A crosswalk at the 22nd Street intersection
****Our preference is a STOPLIGHT on both Broadway and Avenham and Broadway and McClanahan.
