Safety, Not Silence: Consistent AVMA Violations behind closed doors

Safety, Not Silence: Consistent AVMA Violations behind closed doors
The Issue
URGENT PETITION TO THE AVMA COUNCIL ON EDUCATION
We, the undersigned students, alumni, and advocates, urgently call upon the AVMA Council on Education to conduct a full and impartial investigation into Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine before granting any re-accreditation. This request is grounded in overwhelming documented evidence of systemic misconduct, regulatory violations, and student endangerment — all of which directly contradict AVMA accreditation standards.

⚠️ A Pattern of Concealment and Deception
In the weeks leading up to your site visit, RUSVM has hastily implemented superficial changes — hiring staff, putting up safety posters, repairing infrastructure — all meant to fabricate an image of compliance. These reactionary measures are not institutional reform, but a calculated attempt to deceive AVMA reviewers.
- Last-minute hiring of medical and mental health staff after semesters without coverage
- Infrastructure repairs and service expansions students had been denied for years
- Safety signage campaigns used as cosmetic distractions while core issues remain
————————————————————————
⚠️ Documented Institutional Violations
This petition is backed by formal student petitions, legal complaints, and verified testimonies that expose:
- FERPA Violations — Students’ private information, including addresses, shared with unauthorized third parties such as landlords and friends' parents.
- ADA Non-Compliance — Repeated failure to provide legally mandated accommodations to students with documented disabilities.
- Retaliatory Dismissals — Students dismissed for seeking legal assistance or for voicing institutional concerns.
- Administrative Intimidation and Verbal Abuse — Disparaging, discriminatory, and threatening language used by officials including Mr. David Satterlee, associate dean Dr. Karnik & Dean Dr. Robert Gilbert.
- Manipulation of the Accreditation Process — Handpicking compliant students to meet with AVMA, silencing dissenting voices.
- Financial Aid Mismanagement — FAFSA delays, record inconsistencies, and denial of emergency assistance during illness or crisis.
- Student Housing Negligence — The tragic and preventable death of a student in Seaview housing due to RUSVM’s failure to maintain emergency protocols.
- Favoritism and Academic Bias — Double standards in appeal processes, inconsistent application of student handbook policies.
- Discriminatory Faculty Conduct — Board members minimizing medical conditions, one remarking: “I don’t care if your granny dies.”

⚠️ Call for Immediate Oversight and Reform
To uphold the standards of veterinary education and safeguard student wellbeing, we respectfully urge the AVMA Council on Education to:
1. Require randomized student interview selection across all semesters
2. Conduct anonymous, third-party student surveys to ensure honest feedback
3. Review recordings and documents from recent administrative town halls and intimidation communications
4. Audit ADA and FERPA compliance records, accommodation request handling, and institutional grievance procedures
5. Implement a post-accreditation follow-up investigation to ensure changes are not reversed once scrutiny subsides
6. Require the reinstatement of students who were unjustly or retaliatorily dismissed, particularly in cases involving discriminatory conduct, lack of accommodations, or procedural irregularities.
7. Recommend that RUSVM provide financial restitution or debt relief for students who suffered academic, emotional, and economic harm as a result of institutional failures, wrongful dismissals, or denial of federally protected rights.
————————————————————————
This Is About More Than Accreditation
This is about the future of veterinary education, the physical and mental health of students, and the integrity of AVMA’s accreditation process itself. If RUSVM’s misconduct is permitted to go unchecked, it sets a dangerous precedent that allows institutions to prioritize optics over ethical and professional responsibility.
We ask you to take this moment seriously and stand not with the institution—but with the truth.
Students, past, present, and future, are depending on your leadership.
Please act now — before more students are harmed.
