Safer School Zones : Implement crosswalk lights at Glen Manor and Glen Forest and drop
The Issue
My heart pounds with fear every time I think about it. My van was hit by a speeding car at the intersection of Glen Manor and Glen Forest Boulevard in Waterloo. And while I'm thankful it was only my vehicle, I shudder to imagine what might have happened if it had been a child. This intersection is notorious for its dangers; it's a school zone where cars should travel no faster than 30 km/h. Yet, day after day, I watch in horror as drivers ignore the speed limit, posing a grave threat to children and families.
This is not just a personal fear. It's a pressing community concern affecting every family with children who walk to school or play near this heavily-trafficked area. Without proper measures in place, it seems only a matter of time before tragedy strikes.
But we have a solution at hand. By installing crosswalk lights at the corners of Glen Manor and Glen Forest Boulevard, along with clear, bright signage to remind drivers of the speed limit, we can drastically reduce the risk of accidents and protect our kids. These flashing crosswalk lights have been proven effective in other school zones, enhancing pedestrian visibility and reminding motorists to slow down.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and various engineering studies consistently show that enhanced pedestrian crosswalks reduce vehicular speeds and improve safety around school zones. Every successful reduction in speed equates to a decrease in the likelihood and severity of accidents.
We need to act now. Let’s urge the city officials of Waterloo to prioritize the safety of our children and all pedestrians by investing in these crucial safety upgrades. By signing this petition, you can help bring this urgent issue to the forefront and call on our leaders to act before it's too late. Please sign and make our voices heard for a safer community.
