Safer Pedestrian Crosswalk at ISU

Safer Pedestrian Crosswalk at ISU

On November 29, 2021, a graduate student at Illinois State University named Danielle was hit by a car and killed while crossing a crosswalk to attend a class on campus. Danielle was in the Nutrition Master's program at ISU, and she wanted to combine her love for visual creativity with her passion for food and nutrition through food art therapy. She had an immense love for nature, her family, friends, cooking, and helping others.
To prevent this tragic accident from happening again, Danielle's friends and fellow students have created this petition to make that crosswalk a safer place for other students and pedestrians.
This crosswalk is on a busy road and is less than a block from a stoplight intersection. The most prevalent pedestrians are students; this crosswalk connects a large campus student parking lot to an academic building, which means students use this crosswalk to get to class every day. Additionally, this crosswalk connects a junior high school to surrounding neighborhoods. Most cars do not stop for pedestrians at this crosswalk, leaving students to run across during a break in cars or risk being hit by cars that do not stop or slow down.
To make this pedestrian crosswalk safer, we are petitioning to add a solar push button activation pedestrian crossing sign that flashes when a pedestrian pushes it, indicating that they would like to cross and for approaching cars to slow down or stop. Join us in supporting this change to make this crosswalk more visible to oncoming traffic and emphasize the need to stop for crossing pedestrians, dramatically lowering the risk for accidents.
