Safer pedestrian crossing at the junction of South Norwood Hill and Whitehorse lane

Safer pedestrian crossing at the junction of South Norwood Hill and Whitehorse lane
The Issue
Who is affected?
Every day, residents, families, and visitors risk their safety as they try to cross at the junction of South Norwood Hill and Whitehorse Lane. The area is used by people walking to the South Norwood Medical Centre, local schools and nearby bus stops. Parents with children, elderly residents, and those with mobility challenges often find this junction particularly dangerous. The lack of a clear, safe crossing point makes this a very difficult crossing to navigate.
What is at stake?
If nothing changes, this junction will continue to be a danger hotspot. Data from CrashMap.co.uk already shows multiple incidents here over recent years, and without intervention, further accidents are inevitable. A safer, properly designed pedestrian crossing would make the area more accessible, encourage walking, and support the local community. Leaving things as they are means continuing to expose the community to unnecessary danger.
Why is now the time to act?
With renewed focus on improving road safety and encouraging sustainable travel across Croydon, now is the time for action. Residents have raised concerns for years, and the evidence of risk is clear. Installing safer crossing at this busy junction would be a simple, effective step towards making South Norwood safer for everyone. We are calling on Croydon Council to act before a serious accident occurs.
Residents regularly report near-misses and express concerns about the danger at this crossing. Data from CrashMap.co.uk shows a cluster of traffic incidents at and around the junction, underlining the need for action. The road layout and lack of clear pedestrian priority contribute to confusion and unsafe behaviour.
Residents, community groups, and the Croydon Green Party have all voiced the need for a controlled pedestrian crossing, such as a zebra or light controlled crossing, to make this area safer for everyone.
We call on Croydon Council to:
- Conduct a road safety audit of the junction, including pedestrian flow and vehicle collision data.
- Work with residents and community groups to ensure the crossing design meets local needs.
- Implement improved road markings and signage to slow traffic and increase driver awareness of pedestrians.
- Install safe pedestrian crossings (zebra or signal controlled) at the junction of South Norwood Hill and Whitehorse Lane.
