Safely Remove Hazardous Stuff and Relocate Encampment From Greenwood Seattle

Safely Remove Hazardous Stuff and Relocate Encampment From Greenwood Seattle
The Issue
As a resident of Greenwood, Seattle, I have seen firsthand the impact of the encampment on N 87th st and 1st Ave NW bordering a dog park, Fred Meyer and residential street. I never thought I’d write a petition but this experience has just gotten worse so here I am trying.

Safety Concerns if things stay the same:
- Local activities have been disrupted as people can no longer enter the fenced dog park due to safety concerns arising from discarded needles, propane tanks, shattered glass, abandoned cars, stolen residential items like garbage bins, grills, furniture, and trash surrounding the area.
- Grocery shopping to our local Fred Meyer has become difficult with instances of yelling and harassment in the parking lot.
- About 2-4 abandoned cars appearing throughout the area.
- Blatant drug use in the camp is a cause for concern as individuals often run into the street unpredictably causing traffic pile ups. Including people dealing drugs within the camp.
- It blocks park access, sidewalk access, and obstructs 2 roundabout intersections on what are supposed to be “local access” roads bordering the Greenwood Fred Meyer and Mud Bay pet store.
- On Halloween we saw a significant drop in trick or treaters in the area due to safety concerns linked to this growing encampment.

This encampment has grown significantly over the last year with over 15 tents housing more than 20 individuals. The area now extends onto 3 blocks littered with used needles, propane tanks, piles of trash and stolen residential items like garbage bins.
This situation is detrimental from the residential and commercial community: walking pets, grocery shopping, enjoying the park, foot traffic to the stores across the street (Mud Bay, Fred Meyer, School of rock, Ladies Room, Title boxing, and more.
We understand that homelessness is a complex issue that cannot be solved overnight. However, we believe that immediate action is needed for both the welfare of those living in these conditions as well as for residents who are feeling increasingly unsafe in their own neighborhood.
We call upon city officials to safely relocate those residing within this encampment while ensuring hazardous items are removed promptly from our streets.
This will not only restore peace within our community but also provide safer conditions for those currently living within this makeshift campsite.
Please help us in urging city officials towards immediate action by signing this petition today! We’ve tried reporting in Find It, Fix it to no avail.
