Petition to Protect Rice's Whales: A Christian Call for Environmental Stewardship

We, the undersigned, call upon our elected officials and regulatory agencies to take immediate action to protect the critically endangered Rice's whale in the Gulf of Mexico. As Christians and stewards of God's creation, we are compelled to speak out for these magnificent creatures on the brink of extinction.

The Plight of the Rice's Whale
The Rice's whale, only recognized as a distinct species in 2021, faces imminent extinction. With fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the Gulf of Mexico, and possibly as few as 50, this species is one of the most endangered cetaceans in the world. The threats to their survival are primarily human-caused, including oil pollution, ship collisions, and underwater noise from industrial activities.

Our Christian Duty
As Christians, we are called to be stewards of God's creation. The Seventh-day Adventist Church affirms that "we are God's stewards, entrusted by Him with time and opportunities, abilities and possessions, and the blessing of the earth and its resources. We are responsible to Him for their proper use". This responsibility extends to protecting endangered species like the Rice's whale.

Pope John Paul II and Patriarch Bartholomew I emphasized in their Common Declaration on Environmental Ethics that we must be concerned about "the negative consequences for humanity and for all creation resulting from the degradation of some basic natural resources". The preservation of the Rice's whale is not just about saving a single species, but about maintaining the delicate balance of God's creation.

A Biblical Perspective
Francis Schaeffer, in his work "Pollution and the Death of Man," reminds us that while we are distinct from creation as bearers of God's image, we are also part of creation as fellow creatures. This dual nature compels us to see nature as incredibly valuable, made by the God we love. The Rice's whale, as part of God's creation, deserves our protection and care.

Scientific Basis for Action
NOAA Fisheries researchers have documented the critical status of the Rice's whale population and the lack of observed calves in recent surveys. This scientific evidence underscores the urgent need for protective measures to ensure the species' survival.

Call to Action
We urge our leaders to:

  • Implement and enforce the critical habitat designation for the Rice's whale without further delay.
  • Establish stringent regulations to reduce ship strikes, oil pollution, and underwater noise in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Allocate sufficient resources for research and conservation efforts focused on the Rice's whale.
  • Resist any attempts to weaken existing environmental protections that benefit this and other endangered species.

As Christians, we are called to be voices for the voiceless and protectors of God's creation. Let us fulfill our duty as stewards and act now to save the Rice's whale from extinction.
