Safe Water First: Anderson Residents CALL TO ACTION - Implement a temporary MORATORIUM! PLEASE & THANK YOU!!

Clean Water Is Not Optional: Anderson Needs a Pause on expansions, new builds, and tap ins = MORATORIUM!!
Water Safety Before Expansion & Add Ons: Anderson Residents Speak Out!!

NO MORE GROWTH WITH CONTAMINATED WATER!!

(PFAS- forever chemicals) (TCE/PCE/HAA5/HAA9/Chlorine byproducts causing cancer agents)

My mother's health drastically changed when she contracted an incurable disease due to groundwater contamination. Our home was situated within a flood zone with known bad sewage and a half mile from an NPL Superfund Site Zone + the Wheeler Avenue Water Treatment Plant (WTP) (1960s). The emotional and physical toll on our family has been heartbreaking, and I am determined to prevent others from experiencing the same fate.

💥Groundwater contamination in areas adjacent to Superfund sites is a severe public health concern. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are over 1,300 Superfund sites across the United States that have been identified as the nation’s most hazardous contaminated sites. Communities near these sites are at risk of exposure to hazardous substances, which can lead to various diseases, disabilities, and even death. (Ex. Flint Michigan)

The Wheeler Avenue Water Treatment Plant is tasked with ensuring safe water for the surrounding community, yet contamination levels often exceed safe drinking water standards due to the proximity of industrial activities (113+ potential/pollution/contamination sources). Immediate action is required to safeguard public health and our environment.

I am petitioning for a temporary moratorium on all industrial activities within the City of Anderson until "OUR CURRENT WATER" can be fixed. This pause will provide the necessary time to evaluate contamination levels, enhance safety protocols, and implement more stringent regulatory measures. Such measures are crucial to prevent further harm to our communities and to hold culpable parties accountable for neglecting environmental and public safety standards.

This is not only a personal plea but a call to action for anyone residing near a Superfund site in Anderson and connected to Wheeler Ave WTP (Brown Water/Water Pressure issues). Together, we can urge policymakers to prioritize our health and the environment over industrial interests, expansions, and new tap ins that could deplete our water sources. By signing this petition, you are supporting a crucial movement towards greater awareness, prevention, and accountability.

Please sign this petition to protect our families and future generations from the risks posed by proximity to hazardous Superfund sites. Wheeler Water treatment Plant was added to the NPL Superfund Site in 2018. Not only is our current water having issues, but all the new construction around Anderson is causing problems on top of an already strained infrastructure. Your support can drive the necessary changes to prevent further tragedies like the one my family endures daily. Let's stand together for a safer and healthier community.

Petition to the Anderson City Council:

We, the undersigned residents and ratepayers of Anderson and Madison County, are calling on the Anderson City Council to enact a temporary moratorium on further rate hike increases, system expansion, and new water infrastructure commitments until existing water system and contamination problems are fully addressed.

Anderson residents are paying higher water rates while experiencing low and inconsistent water pressure, recurring brown or discolored water, sewage and drainage issues, power outages affecting service, and emergency water-use reduction notices.

These are not isolated incidents — they represent ongoing system failures that have not been corrected despite repeated rate hikes.

Most recently, residents and businesses were asked to voluntarily reduce water use by 25% due to system capacity concerns following predictable winter conditions. This request exposed serious weaknesses in infrastructure maintenance, capacity planning, and operational readiness.

At the same time, the city continues to pursue system expansion and new facilities instead of prioritizing repairs and stabilization of existing infrastructure. Environmental remediation efforts related to known contamination issues are expected to take years, meaning residents will continue to face unreliable service in the near term while paying more.

We believe it is unreasonable and unfair to continue raising rates or expanding the system while current customers do not have consistent pressure, reliable service, or confidence in water quality.

⚠️ WE CALL ON THE ANDERSON CITY COUNCIL TO 📢:

👉 Enact a temporary moratorium on additional industrial additions, expansions, and new service commitments.

👉 Pause water system expansion and new service commitments (Water Park @ Athletic Park within the NPL Superfund Site Zone)

👉 Require a corrective action plan to fix pressure, reliability, and water quality issues for Anderson, IN Voters/Customers/Tax Payers.

🚨 Water is a basic necessity. Ratepayers should not be asked to finance future projects while current systems fail to meet basic service

expectations. A temporary moratorium is a reasonable and responsible step to protect public health, ensure accountability, and restore trust!
