The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Byron, Illinois, respectfully request that the city, the Byron Park District and local Forest Preserve work together on to consider building a modern skate park for our community.

Our town currently lacks a safe and dedicated space for young people to ride skateboards, scooters, BMX bikes and rollerblades.  In the past, Byron had two skate parks. One was not accessible by foot and the other eventually fell into disrepair and became unusable.  As a result, many kids and teens are left without a proper place to ride and often end up riding on the streets, parking lots and other unsafe areas.

A well-designed skate park would provide many benefits to the Byron community:

Safety - A designated skate park would help keep riders off the streets and parking lots where accidents could occur.

  • Healthy Activity - Skateboarding, BMX riding, and similar activities promote exercise and outdoor activity.
  • Positive Community Space- A skate park provides a constructive place for youth to gather and build friendships.
  • Support for Local Families-  Families would have another recreational option within our town rather than traveling elsewhere.
  • Community Partnership - We believe the local Forest Preserve and community organizations may have funding opportunities or partnerships that could help make this project possible.

Many towns our size have successfully built small skate parks that require minimal maintenance that serve youth for years.  Bringing a skate park back to Byron would provide a save outlet for local riders while strengthening the sense of community for our residents.

By signing this petition, you show support for bringing a safe and accessible skate park to Byron.

I have read the petition and hear their concern and desire. That, unfortunately, the development and maintenance of what they desire is beyond the mission and purpose of the city. That being said, I would be glad to partner with the Byron park district and Forest Preserve to see what is possible. The Petitioner and others supporting this petition are always welcome to come to a city council meeting to express their concerns. We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Thank you for contacting me about this issue. The following statements are my opinions and do NOT reflect the opinions of the Byron Forest Preserve Board of Commissioners, the Executive Director, or any staff of the Byron Forest Preserve. I am not in favor of the BFPD developing and/or running a skate park. The BFPD operated the Stone Quarry Recreation Park from 2002 until 2012. It included a skatepark, playground and a splash pad. I would have to check the records, but I believe that every year it lost money, usually around $50,000/year. The board, executive director and staff tried numerous things to try to make it viable. In the end it just didn’t make financial sense to keep it open. If the Bryon Park District or the city of Byron would want to open and run a skatepark, I would support that. I don’t believe that a skatepark is the best use of BFPD resources. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
