SAFE STREETS NOW! for Crookes and Walkley – make our Active Neighbourhood work
Why this petition matters
These are our streets. We live, work, play and get around on these streets. We need them to be safe for everyone.
The Active Neighbourhood idea could be just what we need to protect our streets from the danger of busy cut-through traffic, while still keeping access available for vehicles. Evidence from other similar schemes has shown fewer injuries, lower pollution and reduced traffic both on streets inside and surrounding the area of the schemes.
But the layout of planters we have been given here doesn’t offer this, especially since the recent changes. It has only benefited a few streets, while leaving busy cut-throughs in place (like Springvale Rd, Heavygate Rd), and moving traffic to neighbouring side streets (like Western Road, Cobden View Rd, Slinn Street etc). This causes yet more more danger, noise and conflict.
Make it work
We call on Sheffield City Council to listen and to urgently work with our community to improve the design of the scheme, to remove cut-throughs and prevent dangerous conflicts. We believe that the right layout, tested with careful monitoring for an appropriate trial period, could have the benefits we were promised. We don’t believe that the current design is working, but we do believe the right changes could make it work.
We have a short window of opportunity to make the most of the funding that this scheme has, so we need to make changes soon to trial a successful scheme.
Safe streets for all!
