Safe Spaces for Reactive Dogs

The Issue

I am writing this petition to highlight the urgent need for safe exercise spaces for reactive dogs in our community. As a dog owner facing the challenge of finding a secure environment for my reactive dog to exercise, I have experienced firsthand the lack of suitable options available.

Reactive dog behavior does not indicate a lack of training or effort on the owner's part but rather a need to find the most suitable solution for their dog's well-being. Reactive dogs require specialized care and controlled environments to ensure their safety and the safety of others. By establishing designated areas where reactive dogs can exercise without the risk of encountering other dogs, we can create a safer and more inclusive community for all pet owners.

Dogs can exhibit reactivity due to various reasons, such as past traumatic experiences, lack of proper socialization, genetic predispositions, or high energy levels without adequate exercise. It's essential to recognize that reactive dogs require understanding and support, similar to individuals with PTSD who have access to resources for managing triggers.

The challenges faced by owners of reactive dogs can be overwhelming, leading to potential rehoming or euthanasia of these beloved pets when suitable solutions are not found. By providing secure spaces for reactive dogs to exercise, we can prevent such heartbreaking outcomes and promote responsible pet ownership.

Public green spaces offer the potential to accommodate secure enclosures for reactive dogs without compromising the overall area's use. Additionally, private fields available for rent impose a significant financial burden on owners, with costs ranging from £6 to £10 per visit, making regular safe exercise unaffordable for many.

I propose that local authorities allocate designated secure areas within existing public green spaces for reactive dogs to exercise safely. By implementing these measures, we can ensure we enhance public safety in our community, promote responsible pet ownership and enhance the well-being of both dogs and their owners.

The proposal entails securing a portion of public green space, possibly multiple sections if the area is substantial, by fencing it off completely. Access to this enclosed area would require applying to the local council for a key fob or similar device to open the gate. Only one pet would be allowed in the enclosure at a time, enabling reactive dogs to exercise off-leash while keeping potential triggers separated by the fence. Additionally, there is a suggestion to include a screen covering the lower part of the enclosure to allow visibility for owners while preventing dogs from seeing their triggers.

Together we can make our communities a place where all dogs, including reactive ones, can enjoy exercise in a safe and controlled environment.

Thank you for considering this petition and taking action to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all dog owners and their beloved companions.
