Safe driving isn’t optional — it’s the law. Drive responsibly. Zero tolerance saves lives.
The Issue
Cape Agulhas Municipality,
Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works,
South African Police Service (SAPS),
Traffic Law Enforcement Units
We, the concerned residents, families, and communities of Bredasdorp, Struisbaai Noord, Struisbaai, Agulhas, and Suiderstrand, urgently appeal to the relevant authorities for immediate and effective action against the growing crisis of speeding, reckless driving, and the blatant ignoring of stop signs and traffic laws on our roads – both town and national.
This situation is now beyond frustration — it is a matter of life and death.
Every day, we witness:
Vehicles speeding far beyond legal limits, especially on the R319,
Drivers racing through residential zones, school areas, and near public walkways,
Late-night reckless driving by individuals avoiding law enforcement patrols,
Stop signs being ignored, endangering pedestrians, children, joggers, and other road users,
Wildlife being killed at alarming rates, with tortoises, owls, small mammals, and birds becoming routine roadkill.
Despite repeated reports and appeals to local authorities, there has been no meaningful or lasting enforcement or intervention.
We ask:
How many more lives must be lost before action is taken?
How many more innocent animals must die before their lives are valued?
Must we wait for another fatal crash before this issue is treated with the urgency it demands?
We demand:
Increased and visible law enforcement presence on the R319 and town roads.
Mobile speed cameras, particularly in hotspot areas.
Traffic calming measures (e.g., rumble strips, speed bumps) in key residential and wildlife-sensitive zones.
Regular patrols at night, especially on routes known to be used by reckless drivers avoiding checkpoints.
Clear road signage and public awareness campaigns warning about wildlife crossings and pedestrian safety.
Accountability from the departments responsible for road safety.
We call upon all relevant authorities to treat this with the urgency it deserves. These roads are used by our children, families, visitors, and wildlife – we cannot allow them to become corridors of tragedy.
We will not stay silent. We will not stop raising our voices until safety, respect, and law are restored on our roads.
Signed,
The Concerned Communities of Cape Agulhas Region
(Residents of Bredasdorp, Struisbaai Noord, Struisbaai, Agulhas & Suiderstrand)
