Safe Care, Safe Nurses: A Call for Mandated Nurse to Patient Ratios in Hospitals

The Issue

As a travel registered nurse, I have worked across multiple facilities and have witnessed an alarming trend that compromises patient care and the professional responsibility of nurses. Increasing responsibilities and high nurse-to-patient ratios have resulted in a substandard level of care, impacting both the safety of patients and the welfare of nurses.

This reality is not isolated to my experiences alone. A study conducted by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) clearly discloses that higher patient-to-nurse ratios are directly associated with increased patient mortality risk. In fact, with each additional patient assigned to a nurse, the mortality increases by 7 percent. As healthcare professionals, we should prioritize patient safety above anything and it's become painfully clear that better regulations need to be implemented.

It is crucial that we enforce regulations that mandate manageable nurse-to-patient ratios in hospitals. Not only will it ensure the delivery of optimal care and timely attention to our patients but also result in a safer and more efficient work environment for nurses. We ably serve, yet the disturbing ascending ratios of nurse load responsibility invariably hinders us. It's time for us to lift this burden.

Let us unite for this cause. Sign this petition and help us advocate for mandated nurse-to-patient ratios, thereby promoting safety, efficiency, and quality patient care in our hospitals.
