The Issue

The Woodlands Hills is a planned community developed by Howard Hughes Corporation, designed to offer a high quality of life with comprehensive amenities. Residents of the Dorado Sky Court cul-de-sac, myself included, purchased homes based on assurances by our builders—endorsed by the developers—that there would be ample pedestrian infrastructure, such as sidewalks and safe paths connecting to main areas of the community. Our cul-de-sac has a creek between our end and peace park, which connects to the community sidewalks. The alternative route is a quarter mile away, using the street with several blind corners, which as observed by residents pose a significant safety issue for our children. Whether playing outside or going to and from school, these infrastructure improvements need to be considered and addressed. My own son was riding his electric motorcycle up the road to make his way to peace park, when he nearly avoided being hit by a construction van. Howard Hughes dismissed the safety concern.

After moving in, it became apparent that these promises were not fulfilled. The lack of safe pedestrian pathways has become a critical safety hazard, especially for children who have no safe routes to school or parks. The community's concerns have been brought to the attention of Howard Hughes Corporation and the Homeowners Association (HOA), which is perceived to be under the influence of the developer, thus complicating efforts to advocate for necessary changes. Despite detailed communications outlining the dangers and the community's plea for intervention, Howard Hughes Corporation has maintained that their current and planned infrastructure is adequate and dismisses the need for additional enhancements. We have found this to be false, as various aspects of the community have been modified after the fact, as discussed in Local MUD meetings and through Howard Hughes Representative in the community.

The developer's responses have consistently highlighted a commitment to their original plans and implied that the community's requests are not aligned with their strategic vision, essentially prioritizing their developmental agenda over resident safety. The HOA, which should function as a mediator and advocate for residents, appears compromised in its ability to act independently, given its close ties with Howard Hughes Corporation. This has led to significant frustration among residents, who feel their safety concerns are not being adequately addressed or prioritized.

Given the gravity of the situation and the potential for serious injury or worse, community members, myself included, feel it is imperative to escalate this matter to your media outlet. We respectfully request that you intervene by directly engaging with Howard Hughes Corporation to reconsider their position on this critical community safety issue. Your involvement could significantly influence the developer to fulfill their initial promises and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the safety of all residents, particularly the children in The Woodlands Hills. The safety and well-being of our community should not be negotiable.

I have reached out to most of our elected representatives, their support in holding the developer accountable to their commitments is crucial. We believe that with their help and yours, we can achieve a resolution that aligns with the best interests of the residents and upholds the standards of safety and quality that were promised to us.

Lastly, I can provide all communications, since day 1, with Howard Hughes, where they dragged our inquiry for more than 100 days providing written false statements of where the claim was within their internal process. After they sent a representative to speak with me, I learnt the matter was discussed "in passing at a meeting where engineering was present and quickly dismissed".
