Daniel Meacock started this petition to Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London) and

The flag of Greater London is… something. The flag was recently changed after Brexit, and was seen flying outside City Hall since 2020. It now simply has the word “LONDON”, with drawn globes for the Os and the words “Everyone welcome” in a poorly drawn font underneath, all on a plain white background. This appalling design breaks almost all the rules of flag design, and it looks like it was drawn by a child for a school project.

I did a poll on my Instagram story (with over 1200 followers) and the results were telling. Out of 144 respondents (many from London), 126 (88%) believed the flag to be simply an abomination. Many also suggested a redesign, and some even said they would submit ideas themselves.

The demands are simple: get it changed! I personally suggest doing something similar to what Mississippi over in the United States of America did when they changed their flag, as well as countless cities with similarly poor flags worldwide: a public poll for creative Londoners to design a new flag, to represent Greater London. Alternatively, it could simply revert to what it once was: a crown with a red background on the top, and a stylistic representation of the Thames on the bottom. Personally I think this flag could be improved upon, but it is certainly much better than what we currently have. Many Londoners would appreciate a flag that they could get behind, to express pride for their city.

London is a city with a long and storied past, a vibrant present, and a hopeful future as a global city. Surely that can be expressed with simply a better flag?
