Help Sac Library Staff Get Paid During Covid-19 Closures

The Issue

ATTN: It has come to my attention that change.org is soliciting donations on this issue despite the fact that I have not added any fundraiser. Please do not donate to this issue. Your most important contribution is your voice.

Sacramento Public Library (SPL) has informed their career staff that they will have to use PTO (personal time off) during the possible and likely closure of all 28 branches through the end of March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

PTO is used for vacations and other "personal" reasons for taking time off of work, not for a pandemic such as coronavirus. Also, majority of library career staff are new hires, so they do NOT have enough PTO to sustain their income through this pandemic.

In addition, non-career staff (shelvers and on-call staff) are not backed by the SPL union and do not receive PTO, leaving them especially vulnerable. Though Library employees have reached out to their union, the union representative has made it clear that they likely will not be able to enact immediate change and library staff will have to file grievances later in the future. This is not an option for staff that have bills to pay now.

Other for-profit businesses, such as Starbucks, have offered to give their staff paid administrative leave during this crisis, including giving them their benefits. Sacramento Public Library has refused to do so. The Covid-19 outbreak is an event that is unlikely to end anytime soon and its time period is indefinite. The vast majority of library staff have been informed that they can NOT work from home and they can NOT come into work, leaving them with no options and no future income to sustain themselves.

Multiple other library systems have sent their staff home and are paying them in full with benefits. This includes Contra Costa County Library System just next door in the Bay Area.

If you think this is unfair or have fond memories/experiences at your local library, if you use our free resources like our meal programs for underprivileged children, GED program, 3D Printing Services, Language Learning services, the Library of Things, Seed Libraries, ESL classes, Baby Storytimes, and SO MUCH MORE!

Please support your local library staff by signing this petition to show the Library Board of Supervisors how much library employees matter to you and your community.

Better yet, write an email to your board of supervisors to demand library staff get paid admin leave during this pandemic at this link:

OR event better, join the board during their video conference meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18th at 11:00am at this link on Zoom:
