The protection of Town Planning Industry by a Professional Body In South Africa

The protection of Town Planning Industry by a Professional Body In South Africa
The Issue
We as qualified Town planners and registered members of both South African Council of Planners (SACPLAN) and South African Planning Institute (SAPI) hereby challenge these two organizations to bring security into the Town Planning industry. We want the Planning Profession Act 36 of 2002 to be fully amended and take into account all the views that we have. We find the Act not relevant as it does not enforce planning work that is specifically for Town Planners.
As South African Town planners, we are concerned that we will never work towards a more integrated and just society if we allow other professions to do work that we are trained for. Town Planners have spent years in various institutions studying and learning various paradigms with regard to the planning profession as a whole. Professions that are invading Town planning are causing disruption because they do not have proper background of Town Planning.
We are not happy with SACPLAN at all. This body is operating as a parasite in the Town planning profession. We want to enforce planning work to be designated to all Three (3) categories of Planners (Candidate, Technical and Professional Planner). We are also not happy with paying Fees to the organization that does not look after us.
Therefore a board exam must be created for all Town planners to undergo for them to be registered as Professional Town Planners. The board exam can be divided into two: 1. Town planners specializing in Land use and Land management applications 2. Town planners who will specialize in Spatial Planning (Policymaking).
