Sack Bill Sweeney as RFU CEO

Sack Bill Sweeney as RFU CEO
The Issue
Since 2019, the decline of English Rugby has coincided with the appointment of Bill Sweeney as CEO. Even when accounting for inevitable setbacks of COVID19 it is clear he has either very little care or knowledge of the best ways to grow the game in the long term. It is also very clear that there is no accountability for the man at the top given bonuses can be given despite declining performance and mismanagement e.g A £300k+ bonus amid 42 redundancies
We as fans are concerned for the long term health of the game if Bill Sweeney remains in charge and we believe the RFU and English rugby is better served with a change at the top
By almost every conceivable metric the RFU has underperformed since his appointment:
- Bonuses - 8.5% base pay increase + bonuses mean Sweeney is now on £1.1million this year. For context every RFU championship club has had their funding cut from £645k in 2019 to £133k this year
- Low level corporate corruption - Discounting certain fixtures (e.g England's away tour of NZ) to enhance winning % to collect aforementioned bonuses
- Profitability - No profit expected for at least 10 years
- Staff retention - 42 redundancies and a revolving door on assistant coaches despite bonus increases for the board
- On pitch performance - Disappointing Autumn Nations Series results with some good performances but on a wider scale England were World No.1 when Sweeney arrived in 2019 they are now 7th
- Participation - Active players and participation in state schools have declined even from pre-COVID levels
- Tradition - Sweeney has in the past spoken about how changes to the English game need to be evaluated carefully in order to protect tradition; proceeds to sell the naming rights to Twickenham stadium
- League Tiers - Non-existent promotion / relegation system for Tier 2 clubs meaning pyramid climbing to the top is effectively impossible
