The Issue

Fast learning students are all around us but they do not receive special education even though the deviate from the norm just as much as children with IEP’s. They are given a general education curriculum to follow which often times they already know or are able to learn very quickly. These children are often bored in school and have difficulty staying motivated, engaged and curious because they are forced to do things they already know…. It can be very frustrating for anyone… Can you imagine for a moment, day in and day out, waking up everyday to sit in a classroom where you already know everything being taught?? It can be incredibly frustrating…

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about grade acceleration, often propelled by administrators who want to keep their funding at the highest… putting profit before people… these students who remain unchallenged usually grow up to be underachievers having never being challenge in a traditional school setting. They do well in class and help drive up class averages but their help ends up being their detriment. They do well so everyone assumes they are fine… they speak up and they say want to do more but the district ignores them… why are they holding these bright children back and dimming their future? Please read “A Nation Empowered” and look into the Belin Blank Center, the Acceleration Institute at the College of Education at the University of Iowa… Over a century of research conducted by top universities such as John Hopkins has dispelled so many rumors about grade acceleration… this is the best option for academically accelerated students but NYS does not provide any incentives for keeping these children on the same trajectory. Please help me in making a change for these students..
