Save Open Space Kota Kinabalu

Nov 28, 2017
Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai have announced that the state government agreed to gazette Tanjung Aru Prince Philip Park to 30 acres in which double the area of its previous size of 13.7 acres.(1)
He also declared that Kota Kinabalu City has no issues anymore with open space.
In 2016, the Mayor have promised to resign if Prince Philip Park is not gazetted as scheduled in the first quarter of 2017, that is end of April 2017. (2)
The Mayor is wrong to announce that Kota Kinabalu has no issue with open spaces because instead of gaining, the public will lose more than half of the Tanjung Aru public use or open spaces to TAED reclamation and resort project.
The Mayor also have forgotten the important details of his promise to resign as he still failed to get the park properly gazetted the park 7 months after his promised time frame.
Why? Let us explain how the the Mayor failed of his promise and mislead the public much about the Tanjung Aru beach and the Prince Philip Park.
In 1963, a land situated at Tanjung Aru coastal covering an area of 85 acre (12946) was gazetted under G.N.S 38-63 as foreshore reserve under the Plan No 01124963 revised (1991).
About 42.8 acres of the gazetted taken over by the state government for the KKIA airport runway expansion from 1970.
The remaining 42.13 acres is among the Prince Philip Park (11.43 acres), Shell Traffic Game (7.02 acres) and remaining of unused foreshore reserve (26.38 acres) which accessible to use by the public.
So, the public will lose about 12.13 acres of its 42.13 acres remaining gazetted foreshore reserved when compared with the new 30 acres area of Prince Philip Park the state government agreed to gazette in the recent announcement by the Mayor.
The public also will lose about 6.77 acres of the open rugby field next to Jalan Lapangan Terbang which total lost of public land at Tanjung Aru increased to 18.9 acres or 61.7 acres if count the original 85 acres of 1963 gazetted foreshore reserved.
Under TAED project plan, half of Prince Philip Park existing area will be excavate for a water channel for boats owner to access their luxury condo unit.
It is important to preserved the existing area of Prince Philip Park due to its historical significant in Sabah's history which expand the period of more than 40 years.
The Queen Elizabeth 2, Prince Philip and Princess Anne had visited Tanjung Aru Park from 1959 to 1972 or known today as Prince Philip Park.
