For many Sabahans, Tanjung Aru Beach is where some of our best childhood memories were made--us kids begging to be allowed to swim, burying each other in the sand, flying kites while waiting for the ice cream man to arrive, learning how to cycle and rollerblade, catching sand bubble crabs in our tiny palms, climbing the caterpillar and swinging as fast and high as we could at Prince Philip Park playground, eating jambu in kicap and amoi, breathing in the smell of the ocean, eyes-closed listening to the sound of the waves breaking on the beach.
More than that, the beach is home to dreamy bird species, large and small, like the Dusky Munia (endemic to Borneo), Blue Napped Parrot, Java Sparrow, Crested Necked Green Pigeon, and the Indo-Malayan Oriental Pied Hornbill among others. It also served as the 3rd Pit Stop in the 24th season of The Amazing Race and the 2nd Pit Stop in the 4th season of its Asian version--whoa!
With all that said, is it a fair compromise to pave over our last remaining natural beach, in whole or in part, for luxury resorts, hotels, golf course, marina, etc.?
