Graphic Designers Deserve the Right to Keep Designs!
Recently, a graphic designer was fired without warning from S.H. Rider High School's Esports support staff due to expressing their view on their art piece.
Esports was planning designs for new posters, and a member of the graphics team voluntarily created a design pro bono. Both designs are shown above: the original on the right, and the designer's initial redesign in the left.
Although the quality of the designs was significantly greater than the quality of the original poster, the Esports directors continued requesting changes in the design multiple times, developing 5 to 6 different revised versions. Upon the last and latest request, and after complying with several changes already, the designer felt that the poster would lose its appeal with this last change, and expressed this. The designer didn't receive a response, and was abruptly fired from Esports- not knowing of this until another member of the graphic design team told them.
This designer is Asil. Her generosity of making this design was abused, and the moment she expressed any discomfort with the excessive and compromising changes to her design, she was cast aside. This response from the Esports directors was crass and poorly thought out, not only undermining Asil's creative views on her own work, but also the opinions of every person in Esports who would be represented by this poster.
Bring Asil back into the graphic design team she was wrongly removed from, give the right to represent Esports back to the students, and disallow the removal of staff members without full consensus of the people of Esports.
