Put Child Safety First - support school parking safety needs

The issue

We are the concerned parents from Denistone East Public School (DEPS) P&C Committee and need your support to help keep our kids safe.

DEPS has been advised that after consultations with residents on Henderson Street, Ryde Council will remove the current temporary ‘No Parking 8-9.30am 2.30-4pm School Days’ effective beginning of Term 4 on October 12, 2020.

The removal of the parking restrictions at drop off and pick times will impact the safety of the school children, as it allows for unrestricted all day parking along the Henderson side of the school, leaving no room for student drop-off or pick-up by car.

DEPS has a large school population and needs to maximise drop-off/pick-up points, especially during COVID-19 times, as it allows for better social distancing and safer access points.

The ‘No Parking 8-9.30am 2.30-4pm School Days' parking restrictions currently in place on Henderson Street, means children can be safely dropped off and pickup from school without any risk to their safety, or other school community pedestrians.

Removal of the restricted parking means;

  • children coming to school by car cannot enter via the Henderson St entrance
  • increases the risk of parents/carers double parking and children moving between cars
  • significantly increase in traffic on Lovell Rd, Brabyn St and Kings Rd as parents look for safe drop off spots
  • longer queuing times for Brabyn circular drop-off
  • further congestion along Boronia Lane
  • parking around the school will become increasingly more difficult

With your help, we can show Ryde Council that we value the safety of the school community and that the safety of children and their families must take precedent over the need for locals to access unrestricted all day parking.

Please sign this petition requesting Ryde Council re-instate the ‘No Parking 8-9.30am 2.30-4pm School Days' parking restrictions on Henderson Street, for the safety and benefit of the school community.

On behalf of our children and the wider school community, we thank you for your support.
