Save New Jersey's Fragile Coastal Marine Life from Rutgers University’s Ocean Blasting Assault!

The Issue

On July 2, 2014, Rutgers University was given the green light to try a dangerous seismic experiment that has the potential to kill or injure thousands of marine mammals, fish and endangered whales.  Past experiments of this type by the military and other government agencies have resulted in the stranding and deaths of large amounts of endangered wildlife that call the oceans their home.   The project could not take place at a worse time and location, the peak migration and breeding of whales, dolphins, turtles, fish, and shellfish.  Despite Rutgers claims to the contrary, this seismic hammer pounds the New Jersey Coast and marine life every 5 seconds, 24 hours a day for 30 days. Rutgers University will use this sonic attack of 250 decibels to blast the New Jersey coast and its fragile marine eco-system.   Humans are impaired by 115 decibels for only 30 seconds so imagine the damage, injury and death this will cause to the marine life including endangered whales, dolphins and the entire underwater eco-system who will be blasted many more times than this level.    Rutgers is planning the attack under the guise of a study that will provide little useful information and will begin in the immediate future with little to no further notification.   The Federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) refuses to honor New Jersey's request to review the environmental and fisheries impacts on marine life of this dangerous and unneeded project.  This Project entitled, "Rutgers University led seismic study off Barnegat Inlet," serves no real need and the information it will collect can easily be done with computer models.  In fact, the same data was collected a few years ago using a less dangerous technology.

There are 26 marine mammal species located in or moving through this project area. Marine life relies heavily on their hearing to communicate, find food, and ultimately survive.

This attack by Rutgers University will permanently damage New Jersey’s coastal Marine Eco-system.  The study not only affects the well-being of New Jersey's marine life but also the economy of New Jersey with regards to its eco-tourism and commercial fisheries.     Rutgers University plans to start this study now!     Check out the website: www.cleanoceanaction.org     Please join the Edison Wetlands Association, Clean Ocean Action,Mayor Kirk Olson -Barnegat Light, Jersey Coast Anglers Assoc., NJ Beach Buggy Assoc., NJ Council of Divers, NJ Outdoor Alliance, NJ State Fed.
