RRSP Reform: Allow Cash-Secured Puts for Canadian Investors

The Issue

Canadians deserve the freedom to grow their retirement savings with safe, proven strategies. One of the best is the cash-secured put — a conservative options technique that lets investors choose their purchase price for a stock while earning income. Yet today, it’s banned inside Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs).

Here’s how it works:
Imagine you want 100 shares of Coca-Cola. The stock is $70, but you’d prefer to buy at $65. Instead of just waiting, you sell a put option — essentially saying, “I’ll buy Coke at $65 if it drops.”

In return, another investor pays you a premium (income). Two outcomes are possible:

  1. If the stock falls to $65 or lower, you buy at your preferred price — and keep the premium.
  2. If the stock stays above $65, you don’t buy — and still keep the premium.

Either way, you get paid while waiting for the price you want. Because the cash is set aside in advance, it’s a safe, conservative strategy — ideal for retirement accounts.

Why this matters: Allowing cash-secured puts in RRSPs would boost retirement planning, improve financial literacy, and modernize Canadian investing. It would also generate tax revenue to support social programs, build infrastructure, protect natural resources, and help reduce food insecurity.

The solutions already exist. Many platforms worldwide require a short options knowledge review before granting access — a safeguard that works. And brokerages already set aside cash when you place limit orders; the same process can secure funds for cash-secured puts, ensuring safety without margin (borrowing).

It’s time to modernize. Canada should update outdated rules, empower everyday investors, and give citizens greater control over their financial futures. Sign now to urge the federal government and brokerages to allow cash-secured puts in RRSPs — with simple safeguards in place.
