2025 may have ended on December 31, but the femicide toll for that year continues to climb - as it does every year.
On New Year's Eve, I'd confirmed the killing of 77 women. Today I add another woman to the 2025 count. Her death means we lost 78 women. As I am monitoring around 15 other suspected femicides from that year, we are most likely nearer to 100 women lost in 2025. Their deaths will no doubt be confirmed over the coming months.
Today, NSW Police confirmed they charged a 40-year-old woman and her 44-year-old lover over the death of an as yet unidentified 48-year-old woman in Goulburn on December 30, 2025.
The victim was found dead at her home on January 3 this year. I was aware of her death at the time she was found by police but it was unclear these past few weeks whether or not she passed away in 2025 or in 2026.
I go to great lengths to ensure the count is as accurate as possible and this woman's death shows why patience is the key.
With 78 deaths in 2025, 105 in 2024 and six already this year , we have now lost 189 women since January 1 of 2024 (I've been doing this mini-count since installing the She Matters Mural in Hosier Lane, Melbourne on March 8, 2024).
I would love your ongoing support in helping me to get a Royal Commission into the Killing of Women and Girls - all you need to do is encourage everyone you know to sign the petition. Every signature brings one step closer to a national femicide inquiry - something we should have had many years ago.
I document all Australian women & children lost to murder, manslaughter, neglect and other unlawful acts regardless of perpetrator gender or relationship to the victim. This means not all women and children killed are lost to domestic violence. They are also killed by people known to them (ie friends) or by strangers. My work includes Australians killed overseas. Every death is documented at AustralianFemicideWatch.org/database.
