This morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will discuss domestic and family violence at a meeting of the national cabinet today.
Action on any violence against women and children has been slow and inadequate and the longer our PM and premiers drag the chain, the more names and stories are added to my femicide and child death.
This morning I am adding updating the counter, after a woman was found murdered in her Bacchus Marsh, Victoria home this morning.
Homicide detectives are interviewing a 75-year-old man who was located at the address and taken to hospital with superficial injuries. The man is known to her.
She is the 47th Australian woman killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence - the year before 106 women were killed.
I am hoping Albo will carry with him the stories of ALL the women and children killed this year - not just those murdered by family members. This meeting needs to include the women and children killed outside of the domestic violence context otherwise they are ignoring around 35% of deaths.
Meanwhile, Victoria and Queensland have both recorded 12 femicides each - this means more than half the femicides this year were committed in just two states. In Queensland, the Liberal Government has been slashing funding and support services and the Domestic Violence Minister has no idea how many women have been killed in that state - perhaps she should follow my work?
And in Victoria, the media and Labour Government continue to ignore femicides. When men are killed in this state they get tears from the premier and commitments to change and copious stories and reflections from the city's biggest media outlets.
The past two weeks of sexual violence and femicides shows us there's been little headway made on women's safety, even when our leaders tell us otherwise. This is an epidemic of male violence. And it is not abating.
