Increase Frontline Intensive Care Unit Nurses Pay (£23k)

The Issue

Intensive Therapy Nurses are currently caring for our Prime Minister, among thousands of other critically ill UK residents. They are saving lives on a daily basis as they risk their own and that of their families. They do this out of dedication to their profession but do not think for one minute they are not afraid. They, more than most of us, understand the risks they face & yet they turn up for work day in day out for gruelling 12 hour shifts, sweating in their PPE, rarely taking comfort breaks and becoming dehydrated and exhausted by the end of every shift.
If you think they’re highly paid for their level of training and responsibility you are sadly mistaken. A starting wage for a current ITU nurse at a Band 5 is  £23,000, rising to a maximum of just £29,608.
Remarkable, less than £30k a year for nurses who possess life saving skills, people who we are praying will be able to save us, should we need to enter their high tech units.
In order to allow colleagues to have a break, a nurse who is trained to deal with patients on a one to one can be responsible for 3 ventilated patients. Surely that is worthy of a pay increase? How can we justify the wages of city workers & other employees now being furloughed at home on 80% of their £60k salaries, with the benefit of being able to sit in the sun & make the most of a rest while staying safe at home & yet know these nurses are risking everything for so little financial reward?

We all know nursing is a vocation, it shows a strength of character, compassion & love for people but they also deserve to afford a holiday, a rest. Never more so than once they have assisted in pulling our country through this crisis, least not that of our own Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Let us not forget their efforts, please sign to reward them.

I specifically propose they are paid at a band higher in recognition of their ‘intensive’ role of ITU nurse.
