As traffic continues to worsen in North Carolina, especially in growing metropolitan areas, a good solution may be to allow lane filtering for motorcycles. Lane filtering is the practice of motorcycles filtering in between lanes in stopped traffic and at red lights. This removes motorcycles from standing traffic, protecting riders from being pinned between vehicles and lowers wait times at lights as motorcycles can accelerate through intersections all at once fast enough to not delay other vehicles, minimizing the amount of vehicles in line for a light. This would also have an impact on emissions from stationary vehicles during increased traffic. Lane filtering is a common practice in most of the world, some states in the US have adopted it as well. North Carolina can benefit greatly by legalizing lane filtering for motorcycles as we have a large number of people that ride motorcycles on a regular basis.
