Mecklenburg & Union Counties For A Cleaner Charlotte Metro started this petition to Governor Roy Cooper and

As concerned citizens of Charlotte Metro and the surrounding areas we are asking for your immediate attention to the increasing problems of roadside trash and unattended/overgrown medians and sidewalks across our area.  The persistent accumulation of litter along our highways has gone unchecked and grown to critical proportions in many spots. Propelled even further by the COVID pandemic, citizens are feeling a growing sense of stress, anxiety and hopelessness seeing our once beautiful streets tarnished by enormous amounts of trash. This accumulation of garbage also presents an ecological hazard as it is washed into our creeks and waterways.

We are aware of budget cuts to the NCDOT and the elimination of Inmate Litter Pickup programs and ask that you revisit these important solutions to provide much-needed relief.  Further, please consider better ways to enforce the NC littering laws as well as implement educational programs, signage, tv spots, etc. in both English and Spanish explaining the severe impact of littering.

Throughout our areas there have been small group efforts to remove trash as best we can and citizens are happy to continue these efforts. However, students and other untrained citizens can only do so much, especially along the higher traffic areas that are seeing some of the worst accumulation of garbage i.e, I-485, I-77 and Hwy 74, to name a few.

Related to unattended medians and sidewalks managed by NCDOT;  our concerns are weeds, overgrowth and trash which is not only an eyesore but these conditions lead to dangerous spots where rain water backs up causing potential road erosion and hydroplaning.  A prime example of this negligence is Providence Rd. at I-485 all the way to the Union County line. We are aware of a business willing to manage some of these areas but was told they are not allowed per NCDOT.

As our elected leaders, you have a responsibility to fight for quality of life for all citizens. We have become increasingly frustrated by the seeming apathy of government concerning these issues. Please reinstate much needed assistance to combat this ever growing problem, truly effecting North Carolinians’ quality of life. Thank you.
