Start a Rossview High School GSA

The Issue

Rossview High is an amazing school with some amazing clubs and programs. Rossview is by far the most progressive school in Clarksville, and continues to move towards acceptance of all students. It has, however, come to the attention of many students (ourselves included) that there is not a concrete support system for LGBT+ students in the school. Many students feel unwelcomed or unsupported by some teachers and staff of the school, or struggle to feel a sense of community even amongst other LGBT+ students. It would be beneficial, in the opinions of many students, to have a GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance), as similar clubs have been put in place in many other high schools. The goals and benefits of a GSA would be to

1. Protect LGBT+ students and give them a sense of community amongst peers in a similar situation

2. Draw awareness towards LGBT+ issues (such as bullying and harassment within the school)

3. Create an outlet for LGBT+ students to voice their struggles and frustrations amongst each other

4. Help students to "come out" or find/accept their identities.

The goal of starting a petition would be to show how many RHS students would feel they or their peers would benefit from having a program like this. Many students have shown interest in the idea via the student-run Rossview High LGBT+ Instagram account (@rossview.lgbt) which is run entirely by Rossview seniors and alumni. This account currently has 149 followers and steadily grows in popularity among students both within RHS and other schools in the district.
