Ron DeSantis, stop the banning! Kids need books!
The Issue
Teachers in Florida are being told that having "unapproved" books in their classrooms can result in them being charged with a criminal felony! Prison time for teaching! This act harkens back to the worst kinds of facist regimes. At at a time when teachers are already walking away from the profession in droves, what could be the reasoning for threatening their very freedoms for providing literacy to our students?
Children are learning that books and ideas are "dangerous" and knowledge is something to be feared!
Tell Ron DeSantis; Florida's children deserve literacy and an agenda-free learning environment! Don't take books from our classrooms! Don't ban books!
The unfortunate fact is that Ron DeSantis does not want children reading books, especially ones with people of color, accomplished women, and LGBTQ+ people. If things do not change soon then children and even adults in college, will be unable to learn basic history and math, Ron DeSantis has banned several different math textbooks seemingly for having images of colored people, and DeSantis also put a ban on a black history course taught in Florida universities. If we do not make changes soon then our future generations will be that of uneducated people who were unable to learn according to basic standards accepted in the rest of the country, that is why we must change these draconian laws soon, otherwise it might be too late.
"The facts of this situation are straightforward: A Florida law signed by Governor DeSantis that every book available to students "must be selected by a school district employee who holds a valid media specialist certificate," which in most cases is the school librarian. This may sound reasonable on the surface, but as the situation in Manatee county shows, it's about creating a bottleneck preventing books from getting into the hands of students. Even more importantly it's about establishing the idea that books are inherently dangerous objects, to the degree that no student can be allowed to handle one without heavy-handed surveillance."
"A similar game is being played with the "vetting" language. Book ban supporters can claim they're not banning books because, in theory, books can be "vetted" and restored to the shelves. Of course, this is how all book bans throughout time have worked. They rarely, if ever, cover all the books all the time. But even when books are finally released to potential readers under a "ban first, ask questions later" system, the message is sent: Books are presumed inherently dangerous. Instead of being glad that a child is reading a book, the system treats every child with a book as suspicious. Policies like this have a ripple effect, recasting reading not as a social good but a threat to be strictly regulated."
